Funeral Expenses Payment

We understand how difficult it is to make the first call after a loved one has passed away. That is why you can call us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We will guide you through what you need to do next, as it differs depending on
when and how the person has passed away.

The DWP have strict criteria on who can apply, and succeed, in making an application for a funeral expenses payment. You must be receiving a specific benefit in order to apply.

The Funeral Expenses payment will not cover the full cost of the funeral. Usually they make a payment toward our professional service fees which includes the coffin, of up to £1,000. They will also pay for the cost of a burial plot or the cost of the cremation including the doctor’s certification form. 

How much you will be awarded depends on your personal circumstances and whether your loved one has left any money in their bank account to pay for the funeral. It is decided on a case by case basis.

The easiest way to find out whether you can make an application is to ring the DWP Bereavement Service Helpline on 0800 731 0469. An advisor will also help you make the application over the telephone. You must make the application for the payment within 3 months of the date of the funeral, otherwise the DWP will reject your claim.

It is important to keep in mind that the payment you receive from the DWP will not cover the full amount of funeral costs.
